Fostering

Southern Comforts Animal Rescue is always in need of loving foster homes. Our organization does not operate a kennel space. Therefore, we rely on the generosity of fellow animal lovers who open up their homes to animals in need. The more foster homes we have, the more animals we can save. Fostering saves lives!

Why Foster?

Being a foster parent can be a formidable task, but it is also an extremely rewarding one. Bringing a homeless or abandoned animal into your home while he/she waits for a forever home sets the stage for a successful adoption. There is no better way for a rescue to assess a dog's personality, temperament and behavior than in a real-world home environment. Dogs are often stressed in a kennel situation and may not behave as they normally would. Fostering provides a way to get to know our animals and answers some important questions for potential adopters; allowing us to place the animal in the right home. It also helps socialize our dogs in a home environment and get them used to being around different types of people and pets.

Are You Ready to Foster?

There are some important considerations you should be aware of before deciding to foster an animal. For example, does fostering fit your household and your lifestyle? Things like allergies, physical and/or mental issues and financial difficulties should factor into your decision making-process. Do you have the time and resources to bring your foster animal to necessary vet visits and meetings with potential adopters? Will you be able to say goodbye to your foster animal when he/she gets adopted?

If you are considering fostering an animal please take the time to read the following article written by Melissa Bahleda, a certified canine trainer and behavioral counselor. It discusses some of the questions you should be asking yourself before committing to becoming a foster parent.
