The Adoption ProcessWe at Southern Comforts Animal Rescue are committed to finding loving, forever homes for as many animals as possible. We strive to ensure that each placement is the right fit for both the animal and the adopter. To that end, we have developed an adoption process that helps us make the best possible choices for our animals. Our adoption process consists of 7 steps: Research, Submit an Application, Phone Interview, Vet Reference, Meet & Greet, Home Visit, Contract & Fees. ResearchNot all dogs are right for all households. If you find an animal you are interested in our our website start with a simple internet search to learn more about the breed. Some considerations include, size of the animal vs. size of your home, grooming demands, amount of exercise needed, hereditary issues, temperament and behavior. For example, if you live in a studio apartment a Great Dane is probably not the best fit for you! Submit an ApplicationOnce you've found an animal you think you'd like to adopt, you will need to submit an application. The questions on our application are designed to help us evaluate what animal would be the best fit for you and your lifestyle. Please be as thorough and honest as possible when completing the application. If you do not see an animal on our website that you are interested in we encourage you to fill out the application anyway. Shelters are full and we are always pulling new dogs! Submit an Online Application here. Download a printable version of the application here. Phone InterviewOnce your application is received you will be contacted by a member of our organization to discuss your application in detail and to give you more information about the pet you are considering. We will ask follow-up questions to the answers you provided in your application and answer any questions you may have about the animal you're interested in adopting and/or the adoption process. Vet ReferenceSouthern Comforts Animal Rescue insists that all animals adopted from us are given the proper medical care for the rest of their lives. Vet references help us to ensure that all of our animals go to safe and loving pet owners. We will contact your Vet to determine if your current/previous animals are/were up to date on vaccines and seen regularly. Please inform your vet that we will be contacting them and grant them permission to discuss your records. Meet & GreetAfter your application, interview and vet reference is complete we will arrange a time/place for you and your family to meet the animal of your choice if he/she is local. We encourage you to bring all family members to the meet and greet. All members of the family should be part of the decision-making process. If you currently have pets, we require you to bring them to the meeting. It is imperative that all animals in the household are compatible with one another. Home VisitIn certain cases Southern Comforts Animal Rescue may require a home visit before the adoption can proceed. The purpose of the home visit is to ensure that the animal will be living in a safe, loving environment where all of his/her needs are met. Contract & FeesIf Southern Comforts Animal Rescue approves your application you will be required to sign our adoption agreement. In addition, we will collect our adoption donation. Fees:Our adoption fee is $350. For out of state adoptions, an additional transport fee is required and is paid by the adopter. Transportation fees start at $250 and can be greater depending on the method of transport. Please note: our adoption fees are meant to cover expenses accrued for the routine care of our animals. This includes all vaccinations and spay/neuter surgery. This does not include heartworm treatments, orthopedic and other surgeries, additional bloodwork or x-rays or any other non-routine medical expenses. SOCO will provide all necessary medical care beyond the routine expenses listed above. For these added expenses we rely solely on the generosity of donors. |
